If you’ve ever had a cat or dog urinate on your carpet, you’ll know how difficult the smell can be to remove. You might clean the affected area, use a carpet freshener or even hire a carpet cleaning machine, only to find the unpleasant odour returning a few days later.
So, can professional carpet cleaning remove cat and dog urine smells?
Yes, in many cases. However, the result depends on how deeply the urine has penetrated, how long it’s been there and whether the carpet underlay or subfloor has been affected.
At CarpetProCleaning, I provide professional pet urine carpet cleaning in Wallasey and across the Wirral, using specialist enzyme treatments, hot water extraction and targeted cleaning methods.
Why Does Cat and Dog Urine Smell So Bad?
When a pet urinates on a carpet, the liquid doesn’t necessarily stay on the surface.
Urine can penetrate the carpet fibres, backing and underlay. In more serious cases, it can reach wooden floorboards or concrete subfloors.
As urine breaks down, bacteria and chemical changes contribute to unpleasant odours. Dried urine residues can also become noticeable again when exposed to moisture or humidity.
This is why a carpet can look perfectly clean but still smell of urine.
A Real Wallasey Job: Finding Hidden Pet Urine with UV Light
I recently completed a job for a returning customer in Wallasey who was struggling with a persistent pet urine smell.
The carpet looked clean under normal lighting, but the odour kept returning.
During my inspection, I used UV light to identify several affected areas that weren’t visible to the naked eye. I recorded the inspection and the results after treatment.
After applying specialist enzyme-based cleaning solutions, allowing appropriate dwell time and carrying out targeted extraction, I checked the carpet again using UV light.
The previously visible fluorescence was no longer detectable during the final inspection, and the customer was extremely pleased with the results.
It’s a good example of why finding the source of the smell matters just as much as cleaning the carpet.

You can see the photographs, video and full explanation in my previous article:

UV light can help identify possible contamination, although not every fluorescent mark is urine and not all urine residues will fluoresce. It is a useful inspection tool rather than a definitive test.
Why Does Urine Smell Return After Carpet Cleaning?
One of the biggest misconceptions about carpet cleaning is that removing the visible stain automatically removes the source of the smell.
Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
Standard carpet cleaning may remove contamination from the fibres while leaving urine trapped deeper in the carpet backing or underlay.
When humidity increases or the affected area becomes damp, the smell can return.
If urine has soaked into the underlay, cleaning the carpet surface alone may not solve the problem.
That’s why I assess the extent of contamination before choosing a treatment.
How I Treat Cat and Dog Urine in Carpets
Professional pet urine treatment involves more than spraying deodoriser over the affected area.
Depending on the carpet and severity of contamination, my process may include:
- Inspection: Identifying affected areas and discussing previous accidents or cleaning attempts.
- UV light detection: Locating possible hidden urine contamination where appropriate.
- Enzyme treatment: Applying specialist products to help break down organic contamination.
- Dwell time: Allowing the treatment sufficient time to work.
- Deep extraction: Removing contamination and cleaning residues using professional equipment.
- Final assessment: Checking the results and advising whether further treatment is necessary.
For deeper contamination, I can also use a Water Claw extraction tool to help remove liquid from the carpet and underlay.
However, even powerful extraction equipment cannot guarantee complete removal of urine that has penetrated the underlay or subfloor.
Choosing the right cleaning chemicals is just as important as using the right equipment. Different carpet fibres and types of contamination require different treatments, particularly when dealing with pet urine.
I use professional-grade cleaning solutions, including specialist enzyme treatments where appropriate, rather than relying on ordinary household products or simply masking unpleasant smells.

Can Professional Carpet Cleaning Completely Remove Cat Urine Smell?
Sometimes yes, but not always.
A recent accident affecting only the carpet is generally easier to treat than repeated urine contamination that has been left for months.
Cat urine can be particularly persistent, especially when a cat repeatedly marks the same location.
If contamination has reached the underlay, skirting boards or subfloor, additional treatment or replacement of affected materials may be necessary.
I prefer to explain these limitations rather than promise complete odour removal in every situation.
Is Dog Urine Easier to Remove Than Cat Urine?
Not necessarily.
Although cat urine is often associated with strong, persistent smells, the amount of contamination and how long it has been present are usually more important than the type of pet.
A single accident from a dog may be relatively straightforward to treat.
Repeated accidents from a puppy or an older dog, however, can cause extensive contamination beneath the carpet.
Every situation needs to be assessed individually.
What Should You Do After a Pet Urine Accident?
Acting quickly can help prevent urine from spreading deeper into the carpet.
- Blot immediately: Use clean, absorbent towels to remove as much liquid as possible.
- Avoid scrubbing: Aggressive rubbing can damage carpet fibres and spread contamination.
- Don’t pour excessive water onto the carpet: This can push urine deeper into the backing and underlay.
- Avoid mixing cleaning chemicals: Some combinations can damage carpets or create dangerous fumes.
- Seek professional advice if the smell persists: Particularly when accidents happen repeatedly.
I also explain common household cleaning mistakes in my article Deep Carpet Cleaning Tips to Avoid.
Why Carpet Fresheners and Household Deodorisers Often Fail
Carpet powders, scented sprays and air fresheners may temporarily disguise urine smells, but they don’t necessarily remove the contamination causing them.
Once the fragrance fades, the smell can return.
Some household products also leave residues that attract dirt or interfere with professional cleaning treatments.
The aim of professional urine treatment is to address the source of contamination, not simply cover it with perfume.
When Does Carpet Underlay Need Replacing?
Not every urine-contaminated carpet needs replacing.
However, replacement may be necessary when:
- Pets have repeatedly urinated in the same area.
- The underlay is heavily contaminated.
- Urine has penetrated the subfloor.
- Previous treatments have failed to resolve the smell.
- Further cleaning would cost more than a practical replacement solution.
Sometimes the carpet itself can be saved while the contaminated underlay needs replacing.
A proper assessment helps determine whether cleaning is worthwhile.
Can Pet Urine Smells Be Removed from Sofas and Upholstery?
Yes, professional treatment can sometimes remove pet urine contamination from sofas, armchairs and other upholstered furniture.
However, urine can penetrate deeply into foam cushions and internal padding.
Cleaning the outer fabric may not reach the source of the smell.
The outcome depends on the upholstery material, cushion construction and extent of contamination.
