Carpet Cleaning Machine Suction Test

Carpet Cleaning Machine Suction Test

At CarpetProCleaning, I carried out a live suction test to show the real difference between household vacuum cleaners and professional carpet cleaning machines.

Using a calibrated vacuum gauge, I measured vacuum suction (in inches of mercury – inHg) from several machines:

  • Henry Hoover
  • Vax vacuum cleaner
  • Single-motor DIY carpet cleaner
  • Two-motor professional extractor Carpet Cleaning Machine Suction Test
  • Boosted three-motor professional system Carpet Cleaning Machine Suction Test

Each machine was tested under the same conditions, with the gauge visible on video so you can see the readings change in real time. The results speak for themselves – the professional equipment achieved far higher suction levels than any domestic or DIY machine.

Why suction power matters

Vacuum suction strength determines how effectively a machine can extract water, soil, and contaminants from deep within carpet fibres and upholstery fabrics.

Higher suction means:

  • Deeper cleaning – dirt and grit are removed from the base of the pile.
  • Better water recovery – carpets dry much faster.
  • Longer-lasting cleanliness – fresher, more hygienic results that stay cleaner for longer.

The problem with single-motor and DIY machines

Single-motor or lightweight DIY carpet cleaners simply don’t have enough suction power for deep extraction over large areas.
While they may remove surface dirt, they struggle to recover moisture efficiently. This often leaves carpets and upholstery very damp for extended periods.

Excess moisture can cause several issues:

  • Prolonged drying times allow mould and mildew to form in the carpet backing.
  • Bacteria and odours can develop as the fibres remain damp.
  • Shrinkage or damage to certain fabrics and adhesives may occur.
  • The area can become an unhealthy environment for people with allergies or respiratory sensitivities.

Professional multi-motor extraction systems avoid these risks by combining strong vacuum lift and high airflow, ensuring deep cleaning with rapid drying.

Carpet Cleaning Machine Suction Test results summary

  • Henry Hoover: minimal suction – fine for dry dust only.
  • Vax vacuum: moderate suction – not suitable for extraction cleaning.
  • Single-motor DIY cleaner: limited water recovery – leaves carpets wet.
  • Two-motor professional machine: strong suction, excellent recovery.
  • Three-motor boosted system: outstanding power and fastest drying.
